I would like to introduce our highlighted USD #374 teacher:
Mrs. Jaime McVey
1. Tell us a little about yourself. (i.e. where you were born, raised, where you went to: elementary, middle, and high school, what your early life and school experiences were like.)
I was born and raised in Buffalo Oklahoma, a small town in Northwestern Oklahoma. Attended Buffalo public schools and I participated in fast-pitch softball, basketball, slow-pitch softball, and track. Music was also a big part of my school years participating in choir, band, show choir and honor choir. I also participated in many different organizations like FFA, Student Council, and Pep Club. I enjoyed high school, especially the sports and social part!! I can honestly say that I benefited from growing up in a small school. My husband Jeremy and I live in Copeland Kansas with our two daughters Jailee and Jasee. I have two older brothers, Matt and Ben who I look up to and they have taught me many life lessons while growing up! My family is a big part of my life.
2. What is something your students probably don’t know about you?
I can do a back flip on the trampoline. I was an active member and officer in my FFA Chapter. I was ALL-State in softball my senior year and Honorable Mention in basketball.
3. What are some of your hobbies?
Taking photographs of my family, golfing, riding bikes, camping, fishing, water skiing, and playing softball.
4. What college(s) did you attend and what degree(s) did you attain?
Central Christian College, McPherson, KS; - Associate Degree in Fine Arts, 2000
Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Alva, OK
Newman University, Wichita, KS; - Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, 2004
5. What was one of your favorite classes in college? why?
Speech class with Professor Anderson because he had fun activities that helped you express your thoughts and special techniques that helped you speak in front of people.
6. Why or how did you pick teaching as a profession and did you think that is what you would do with your life when you were in high school?
I always thought about being a teacher when I was in high school, but I can honestly say I didn’t think it would ever happen! There were three important people who impacted my decision to become a teacher. The first person was Ms. Holly, my Elementary P.E. Teacher. She was a woman who taught me that no matter who you are - with hard work you can accomplish anything.
The third was Coach Melanie Bailey my basketball and softball coach in college. She was a remarkable young teacher and coach; I wanted to be just like her. She always had a smile on her face and always had something positive for every bad situation. Compassionate is one word that would describe Coach. She was compassionate about the game and her players on and off the court. Coach B was really good at teaching me that basketball is not the only thing in life and that I would need to prepare myself for the “real-world." She taught me balance between sports, family, career, and becoming a respectable athlete on and off the court.
7. What all do you do at USD #374?
I teach Pre-kindergarten through 6th grade Physical Education and coach Junior High Girls Basketball.
8. What are the things you like about teaching?
I enjoy seeing improvement in individual students and team success. There is nothing like the look from a students face when you see them do something they never thought they could. I get to teach students how to achieve and maintain goals everyday.
9. In a paragraph or two, write how you feel about the students that you get to work with.
The students here at SES are one of a kind and they make my job so much fun! I enjoy when they challenge me or they set a high standard for themselves.
